Why do we resist self-care?

Have you ever noticed that you sometimes resist things that could make you feel better? Here are some possible reasons why:

  1. Fear of the unknown: You may be hesitant to try new things, even if they can improve your life because you fear the unknown.

  2. Comfort in familiarity: I know, it’s probably just easier to grab a beer and turn on Netflix when you’re tired, but even if those habits are not serving you well, you do them because they are familiar and predictable.

  3. Resistance to change: You may resist change because it requires effort and can be uncomfortable or challenging. Change can be scary; sometimes, we don’t want to feel that way.

  4. Perceived lack of time: You may feel that you don't have time to invest in self-care or self-improvement practices, even if they could benefit you in the long run. I know it seems like it would take longer, but haven’t we all stared at our phones for what we think is a few minutes, but it’s been an hour?

  5. Internalized beliefs or attitudes: You may hold beliefs or attitudes that make you resistant to self-care or self-improvement, such as feeling that it's selfish or indulgent to prioritize your own needs. Ultimately, your self-care will benefit others because you will be more relaxed and available.

It's important to recognize and work to overcome these barriers, as resistance to things that make you feel better can ultimately hold you back from living your best life. By being open to new experiences, embracing change, and prioritizing self-care, you can break down these barriers and live a more fulfilling life.
